What the wireless ignition module actually does
On this generation of RAM the traditional key barrel and separate immobilizer antenna have been consolidated. The ignition node is an electronic assembly that reads the key credential over radio, decides whether the truck trusts it, releases the steering column, and passes the run signal onward. It is simultaneously the ignition switch, the immobilizer antenna and a small computer.
Because it does several jobs at once, a single failure produces a confusing set of symptoms. The truck may not recognise a key that worked yesterday. The fob may refuse to release from the node. The dash may light but the starter never engages. The security telltale may flash steadily with no other clue.
The credential itself lives in your key and is validated against a list the security system holds — the same architecture Chrysler-family vehicles have used for years under a succession of names. The important consequence for an owner is this: when the reader fails, every key fails. If a brand-new programmed key also fails, the key was never the problem, and no further keys will fix it.
Symptoms that point at the module rather than the key
Every key fails at once, including a new one. One dead fob is a fob. All of them, plus a freshly programmed one, is the reader.
The fob will not release from the ignition node, or has to be worked to come out. On a truck that spends its life on rough surfaces this is a familiar complaint and it is mechanical wear inside the node rather than anything to do with the key.
Intermittent no-start that responds to nothing in particular. It starts in the morning and not at lunchtime; it starts after five attempts; it starts if you wiggle the fob. Intermittent behaviour with a healthy 12V and a healthy fob points at the reader or its connector, and the connector is worth checking before the module is condemned.
The fault appeared right after electrical work — a flat battery, a jump start, an aftermarket install, an accident repair. That is trust loss rather than hardware failure, and a relearn resolves it with no new parts. It is the cheapest outcome on this list and the one most often skipped straight past on the way to selling a module.
The checks that cost nothing
The fob battery. A weak coin cell in a proximity fob reads fine at rest and sags under transmission load. RAM provides a backup path — hold the fob against the start button and press the brake. If the engine fires, the fob battery was the answer and the truck is fine.
The 12V battery, properly. Not “the lights come on” — a battery too weak to crank still lights a dash convincingly. On diesel 2500s there are two batteries, and one failing cell in either produces exactly the kind of intermittent electronic nonsense that gets blamed on a module. Load-test them.
The shifter interlock and the brake switch. A selector not fully seated in Park, or a brake-light switch that has failed, prevents a start on a truck that is otherwise healthy. Free to check, and worth checking before anything is quoted.
And ask yourself what happened immediately before the fault appeared. That sequence — jump start on Tuesday, no-start on Wednesday — is usually the whole diagnosis, and it is the question a good technician asks first and a bad one never asks at all.

The used-module trap
A used ignition node from a breaker looks like an obvious saving and is frequently the opposite. It arrives carrying the donor truck's VIN and the donor truck's key list, and until it is reconfigured your truck will not accept it and your keys will not work with it.
Whether it can be reconfigured depends on the module and the platform. Some can be written to a new VIN with capable tooling. Some are locked to their original vehicle once configured, in which case a used part is scrap the moment it was removed from the donor.
Establish which category the module falls into before buying it, not after. The unhappy version of this job is a customer arriving with a $90 part from an online seller that cannot be made to work, having already paid a workshop to fit it.

What a competent module job looks like
Diagnosis before parts. A write-capable tool, a full network scan, live data at the ignition node, and a physical check of the connector and its pins. Vibration and moisture are real enemies on a work truck, and a corroded connector produces module symptoms at a fraction of the module price.
Battery support during the session. Configuration is a write operation, and a write interrupted by sagging voltage can leave a module in a worse state than the fault you called about. A technician who connects a stable supply first is protecting your truck. On a diesel with two batteries this matters more, not less.
The configuration itself: the module coded to your VIN, paired with the engine controller where required, and your keys enrolled against it. Then verification — start on each key you own, with the others out of range; remote functions; and no stored immobilizer faults on a re-scan.

Mobile versus dealer for RAM module work
The structural case for mobile is strongest exactly here, because a truck that will not start cannot be driven to a service drive. Per AAA roadside and repair-cost research, that flatbed is the single largest structural cost on an immobilised-vehicle job — and on a work truck it also costs you the day.
There is a downtime argument on top of the tow. A RAM 2500 that carries tools to a site is not a car, and the difference between “this afternoon in your yard” and “tow it in, we will look at it Thursday” is measured in crew hours, not convenience.
The dealer genuinely wins on warranty work, on recall or campaign work that must be recorded in the manufacturer's system, and on the small set of configurations that route through manufacturer-side authorisation. The framework under which credentialed independents access vehicle security functions is maintained by the National Automotive Service Task Force, and certification standards are published by ALOA.
Texas locksmith licensing runs through the DPS Private Security Program — not TDLR. And treat a flat module quote given without a VIN and without a scan as what the FTC's locksmith scam guidance describes: a number that has not yet met the vehicle.
A Real-World Example
Operator: A Grand Prairie plumbing contractor's 2016 RAM 2500 developed an intermittent no-start over three weeks — sometimes first turn, sometimes after five or six attempts, with the security telltale flashing. Two replacement fobs had already been bought and programmed elsewhere, neither of which changed anything.
Before:
- Intermittent "key not detected" with the security light flashing; no pattern by time or temperature
- Two replacement fobs already purchased and programmed at roughly $180 each — no improvement
- Next quote on the table was a replacement wireless ignition module plus configuration
What changed:
The technician started with a scan and live data rather than a part. Both batteries load-tested acceptably and both fobs read correctly at the node, which ruled out the two things already paid for. Live data during a failed start attempt showed the credential being read but the node dropping communication momentarily. A physical inspection of the module connector found corrosion on two pins, consistent with years of moisture in a work truck. The connector was cleaned, the pins were re-tensioned and protected, and an immobilizer relearn was performed to clear the stored fault.
Results:
- Time on site: 82 minutes including diagnosis
- Diagnostic session: $140, applied against the work
- Connector repair and immobilizer relearn: $215 total billed
- No module fitted — the quoted $280-520 configuration job was not required
Net: Roughly $360 had already been spent on two fobs for a fault that was never in a fob, and the next step on the table was a module for a fault that was not in the module either. A corroded connector is a module symptom at a tenth of the module price, and it is only ever found by looking — which is what the diagnostic session buys.

I see people three fobs deep before anybody scans the truck. Per NASTF service-information practice, immobilizer faults are isolated by establishing whether the credential is being read before any component is condemned — a failure to authenticate a newly programmed credential indicates a fault in the reading or authorising component or its wiring rather than in the credential itself, and directs diagnosis upstream of the key.
